Pediatric ICU
Pediatric ICU is an intensive care unit in a hospital which is specially meant for critically ill infants, children, adolescents and young adults. This intensive care unit is often referred to as PICU. So, any child who is sick is offered highest level of medical care at pediatric intensive care unit. PICU is an intensive care unit which handles children up to age of 17.

- Some of the common conditions in which patients are shifted to PICU:
- Children who have undergone any major surgery which requires extreme care and caution.
- Children with certain heart conditions and complications of diabetes.
- Cases of serious automobile accident or drowning.
- Kids with serious breathing issues such as asthma.
Who takes care of the children in PICU ?
There are several highly skilled pediatricians and pediatric nurses who take care of patients in PICU. PICU has very high nurse to patient ratio. Minute care of the youngest patients is taken so that the child does not feel scared or overwhelmed. Pediatric intensivist who has done 3 years of training in intensive care takes care of the child along with other pediatric specialists.

Attached monitors at PICU check the heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, etc of patients at all times. All kids in PICU have intravenous catheter to administer fluids and medications at regular intervals. Kids in PICU are also provided with breathing machine in case of need.
